This is an unprecedented time for all of us. Science fiction is now reality. AI is changing everything, even more for our children than for us. How can we guide our children to be ethical, rational, compassionate, intelligent citizens when the world is changing so fast?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a certified teacher in California with ten years of combined education and social work experience, I will help you and your children navigate this changing world. My emphasis is on the ethical embracing of technology while exploring the classics and lessons of the past. Artificial intelligence is not going away, and we need to learn how to live with it and thrive. Then again, we are also homo sapiens, hardwired for tactile experiences. I will help you find the middle ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With my master’s degree in teaching, I have experience working with elementary age children through high school, as well as helping adults navigate the adult education and college. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to be the person who is there for you at any time; call or email me with any question or concern. Together, we can navigate curriculum, laws, and your child’s talents and traits, making their educational experience the best it can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teaching Methodologies and Practices:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My preferred teaching method is Socratic. I emphasize deep thinking about a subject and building knowledge through dialogue and manipulation of ideas through various modalities. Reading, discussing, and re-telling or narrating in our own words helps form ideas and encode difficult information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Retelling is best done in the mode that fits your child. Whether it be building a lego set, making a video, putting on a play, drawing a comic strip or something else, your child should engage in the modality of learning and expression that is best for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writing seems like a dying art, but I believe it is more important than ever. I want your child to have the necessary skill to express their ideas eloquently and think about about problems critically. Just because artificial intelligence can write an essay or a novel does not mean that your child should give up their capacity to make their unique thoughts known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explicit instruction is best kept to short, 10 – 15 minute chunks, especially at younger ages. Neuro-science shows us that consistent breaks help to encode information, turning it into long-term memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tactile learning is always better than digital learning. Studies show that handwriting notes is more beneficial than typing. Young children in particular learn through tactile manipulation and body movements. This can be particularly helpful with explicit reading instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although explicit instruction in reading is not always necessary for some individuals, most children benefit from explicit lessons in phonemic\/phonological awareness and phonetic awareness. This is particularly true for children who struggle with reading early on. I can help you develop the building blocks for strong reading skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experience With Neuro-Divergent Individuals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have worked with neuro-divergent students and individuals as both a teacher and a social worker. Most recently, I have been case managing developmentally disabled children and adults for a regional center in California. In that position, I have attended IEP meetings and advocated for my clients with school districts. I can be a tool for you, not only with the school district, but to help navigating regional center services as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Person Centered Planning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a teacher and as a social worker, person centered planning is core to my pedagogical approach. My expertise is assessing your situation and helping you find solutions to your problems. This includes innovative ways to learn material, earn credits, and overcome institutional barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person centered plan (PCP) will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Your child’s homeschooling materials and coursework from their school district.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. You and your child’s learning preferences.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Test scores and individual education plans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Your family’s values and planned outings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. You and your child’s future goals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    After meeting with your family and developing the PCP, I will be available to tutor and develop curriculum on an ongoing basis. I will review your child’s work and collaborate with them on revisions. If your family is traveling or participating in a particular event or lifestyle, I will help craft lessons that blend curriculum with those outings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Here are a list of the subjects I will tutor directly, although I am happy to include additional subjects in your child’s PCP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
